It is possible to replace the (sometimes) unreliable, temperamental and expensive mechanical voltage regulator with an electronic version. It is a straightforward procedure and can be completed within an hour or two.

There are (at least) two regulators available that are more or less a straight swap.
These are:-

Manufacturer Part No. Replaces Car Part
Lucas NCB 403 Volvo Item!
Durite No. 0-848-10 Bosch 0.190.600.001

Fitting.

First disconnect the battery, pull the wires (five terminals) from the old mechanical regulator, don't forget the earth wire, bottom left.

Remove the old regulator by pushing the rubber spigot (bottom right) up through the frame.

Make a small bracket (Durite type only, the Lucas NCB 403 has one fitted) and bolt the new regulator to the bike. Using the rear petrol tank mounting bolt is the most common.

Connect the green/blue, green/red and brown wires to the regulator.

Fit a 15A inline fuse and fuse holder across the red/yellow and red wires (the thick ones).

NB: On the original mechanical regulator the connection between the red/yellow and red (terminals D+ and 51) is a current limiter which cuts out in the event of a short circuit and the new 15A fuse would blow if this were to happen.

Wiring Colour MZ Lucas Durite
BROWN D- - D-
GREEN - BLUE DF DF DF
GREEN - RED 61 + D+
RED - YELLOW D+ Across a 15A fuse
RED 51

CHECK YOUR CONNECTIONS AGAIN!

Then reconnect the battery.

Charging problems should now be sorted, with a constant 14v under normal conditions and 13.5v under full electrical load @ 2500 rpm.

Many thanks to Norman Wade and Andy Miller.
